What Does the METI Japanese Internship Cover?
This is a fully funded internship program. Therefore, selected participants do not pay anything out of pocket for the core internship experience. Specifically, the METI Japanese Internship 2026 covers:
- Round-trip airfare to and from Japan (for on-site participants)

- Monthly activity support allowance of approximately 90,000 yen per month

Two Program Formats — On-Site and Online

Online Internship

Who Can Apply? Eligibility Requirements
To qualify for the METI Japanese Internship 2026, you must meet all of the following conditions:
- Be a citizen of an eligible OECD/DAC-listed developing country (see list below)
- Be aged between 18 and 39 years as of 24 August 2026
- Be a final-year student or graduate of a university (undergraduate or postgraduate level)
- Be proficient in English — IELTS or TOEFL is not required, but an English proficiency certificate is needed. Japanese language ability at JLPT N3 level or above is an advantage
- Be currently residing outside Japan
- Not have participated in the METI internship program between FY2016 and FY2025
- Be available to attend all mandatory training sessions and complete the full internship according to the JIP office schedule

Required Documents
