The METI Japanese Internship 2026 is now open for applications, and it is one of the best fully funded government internship programs available to international students today. Specifically, this program is sponsored by Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) and places selected interns inside real Japanese companies — with all expenses covered. In short, if you want to work in Japan for free and gain hands-on business experience, this is your opportunity.
The METI Japanese Internship 2026, also known as the Japan Internship Program (JIP), is a government-funded initiative run by Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry. Furthermore, the program was created to help Japanese small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) connect with skilled international talent, while also giving young professionals from developing countries real work experience inside Japanese firms.
In addition, the program runs in two formats — on-site in Japan and online — so participants can choose the option that best fits their situation. Around 200 interns from eligible countries are selected each year, with each intern placed at a separate company on a one-intern-per-company basis.

This is a fully funded internship program. Therefore, selected participants do not pay anything out of pocket for the core internship experience. Specifically, the METI Japanese Internship 2026 covers:
Moreover, interns working in Japan earn experience in one of the world’s most innovative business environments — at no personal cost.
One of the biggest advantages of the METI Japanese Internship 2026 is its flexibility. As a result, you can apply regardless of whether you can travel to Japan or not.
For this format, selected interns travel to Japan and work physically inside a Japanese SME. Consequently, you gain direct exposure to Japanese work culture, build personal relationships with your team, and experience life in Japan firsthand. Two terms are available — Term 1 (October to November) and Term 2 (November to December).
For participants who cannot travel to Japan, the online format allows you to work remotely with a Japanese company from your home country. Furthermore, the online program runs for up to 20 days — approximately 80 hours in total — from 24 August to 18 September 2026.
Interns are matched to companies based on their academic background and professional interests. For example, placements are available in sectors such as:
Additionally, since each company takes only one intern, your experience is personal, focused, and hands-on from day one.
To qualify for the METI Japanese Internship 2026, you must meet all of the following conditions:
The internship is open to applicants from OECD/DAC-listed developing countries. For example, eligible nations include:
Afghanistan, Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, Indonesia, Philippines, Vietnam, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Kazakhstan, Jordan, Kenya, Nigeria, South Africa, Egypt, Morocco, Brazil, Mexico, Colombia, Peru, Ukraine, Serbia, Turkey, and many more.
Note: China is currently excluded from this program. For the full and updated list of eligible countries, check the official METI internship website.
Before you apply, gather the following documents:
Tip: Language certificates are not always required at the application stage. However, having one ready strengthens your profile during the screening process.
The application process is straightforward. However, following each step carefully is important because once you are matched with a company, you cannot withdraw.
Step 1 — Register on the Official Portal First, visit the official METI Japan Internship Program website and enter your email address to register. They will send you a link to access the full application form.
Step 2 — Complete the Online Application Form Next, open the link and fill out all sections of the application form carefully. These include your personal information, academic qualifications, work experience, language skills, and sector preferences. The JIP office uses this information during screening, so accuracy matters.
Step 3 — Submit Your Documents Upload all required documents before the deadline of 30 June 2026. Make sure every document is clear, complete, and up to date.
Step 4 — First Interview If your application passes the document screening stage, the JIP office will contact you to arrange a first interview in either English or Japanese. At this stage, you will also need to provide your enrollment or graduation certificate and recommendation letter.
Step 5 — Company Matching After your interview, the JIP office will work to find a Japanese company that matches your experience, interests, and goals. In some cases, there may be a second interview with the company itself. Both you and the company must agree on the match before placement is confirmed.
Step 6 — Acceptance and Contract Signing Finally, once matched and accepted, you will sign a contract with the JIP office and the host company. From this point on, your placement is confirmed and your internship preparations begin.
Beyond the financial support, this internship opens doors that are very hard to find elsewhere. Specifically, working inside a Japanese SME gives you a rare look at one of the world’s most disciplined and innovative business cultures. Furthermore, completing this program strengthens your CV with international corporate experience backed by a Japanese government initiative.
Additionally, many past participants have gone on to secure job offers in Japan or used their experience to advance careers in international business back home. In fact, the METI program is often described as a bridge between global talent and Japanese innovation — and for good reason.
